The 151ST Open at Royal Liverpool – Golf’s original major
From Sunday 16th to Sunday 23rd July 2023, the eyes of the world will fall on Royal Liverpool where the iconic venue will be hosting The Open for the 13th time.
Hoylake, on the Wirral, is home to Royal Liverpool Golf Club and the 151st Open. It is only 20 miles from Chester and Edgar House.
Lying at the very heart of golfing history, Royal Liverpool’s complex links first hosted The Open in 1897, where legends such as Bobby Jones and Tiger Woods have since lifted the Claret Jug. On the last occasion that The Open was held at Royal Liverpool in 2014, it was home favourite, Rory McIlroy, who lifted the Claret Jug.
The course is now back under preparation to stage the Championship for the 13th time, being readied for the world’s best players to battle it out on the unrelenting Hoylake links for the title of Champion Golfer of the Year.
While its appearance may fool you, the links make the trickiest demands of players’ shot selection, distance control and accuracy.
A number of exciting enhancements have been made to Hoylake since it last staged golf’s original Championship most notably with the creation of an eye-catching new par-3. This new development has featured the expert input of the club’s long-serving head professional, John Heggarty. For serious enthusiasts, you can enjoy an early insight into the course, in the new course guide, click here.
The guide provides a comprehensive analysis of every single hole at Hoylake, assessing the opportunities and dangers that lie in wait.
History
Built on the racecourse of the Liverpool Hunt Club, Hoylake retained a dual role as horse racing venue and golf course for the first few years of its existence.
When The Open is played at Hoylake, history happens, so make sure you’re part of the 151st Open Championship!
The Hoylake Role of Honour is Rory McIlroy, winning in 2014; Tiger Woods three-time victor, in 2000, 2005, 200; Roberto de Vicenzo won in 1967; and Australian Peter Thomson a deserving five time winner in 1954, 1955, 1956, 1958 and 1965.
Those champions all followed in the footsteps of the iconic Bobby Jones, the iconic American winner of the inaugural Open held at Royal Liverpool in 1930. This letter from America, and Hoylake ‘royalty’ makes for enjoyable reading, click here.
