Craig y Don – Our Restoration Journey

We’re delighted to have restored our stunning Anglesey home back to its former glory.

What would a renovation be without some before and after photos! Scroll down here and enjoy our restoration journey…

Staircase Hall

The staircase hall was a dark and dreary place. The roof was leaking, the walls damp and the wallpaper peeling. We added double doors into the end wall to join the space to the new breakfast room and kitchen area, flooding the hall with light. We blocked up an old door punched in the staircase wall, we added staircase panelling and restored this grand space to its former glory.

The Dining Room & Kitchen

At the south west end of the house a previous owner had added (but not finished) a very poor side extension. The wall to the Drawing Room had been demolished with addition of ghastly Romanesque pillars. With a low roof the space felt terribly enclosed. We restored the wall to the Drawing Room and demolished the entire extension, rebuilding the space with a high ceiling, roof lights and amazing floor to ceiling bifold doors, maximising the incredible views over the Menai straight towards Snowdonia.

Lillie Langtry Bedroom

With windows on two elevations on the second floor of the tower, this room has super views. As it was, it was near derelict and had previously been used as an office. We immediately recognised the huge potential of this wonderful space and felt it would be the perfect room to honour socialite Lillie Langtry who stayed at the house with her lover Prince Edward.

Prince Edward Bedroom

On the first floor of the tower, like other bedrooms, the space was bland, damp and unloved. We renovated it, paying homage to Prince Edward (who became King Edward VII) who stayed at the house with his lover Lillie Langtry.

Boot Room Entrance

The rear entrance to the house was in a very poor state. We added an entrance to a new Boot room, raised the roof of the existing garage and replaced an old roller door with windows and made a super new games room and spa space inside the old garage.

The Ballroom

Over the years the ballroom had been used as a garage for a previous owners’ white Rolls-Royce and later as a snooker room. It was a dull and depressing space in need of a lot of love and imagination. We restored an oak archway in the front bay window and added a cocktail bar befitting of an extravagant entertaining space.

The Games Room

The dark wet garage and workshop at the back of the building was converted into a fabulous games / yoga room, a gym, a sauna and treatment room. We raised the roof, added roof lights and big windows, and replaced the old garage roller door.

Snug Library

Unbelievably, this small space had been the kitchen for the old house. When we bought the house, all that was left of the kitchen was the AGA, which we sold on eBay. We completely refurbished the room into a lovely cosy snug library.

The Gym

In the depths of the old garage was this dark and dingy space. In the left corner we made a sauna and converted the other part into an atmospheric gymnasium.

Clara Mabel Bedroom

This bedroom was typical of all all bedrooms. Peeling wallpaper, exposed wires and long forgotten. We transformed the space into another luxurious bedroom with walk-in dressing room and ensuite bathroom.

Dragon’s Den Bedroom

On the second floor, this room had been a storage space. Our joiners built two sets of adult size bunkbeds and we transformed the room into a fantastic space for the children (or adults!)

Blodau Bedroom

Another abandoned attic room on the north side of the house. We added an ensuite and refurbished it turning it into a lovely cosy and romantic space.

Menai View Bedroom

With dual aspect windows looking across and down the Menai Strait this is a fantastic light and airy room. We fully refurbished it, adding an ensuite. Whereas in some other bedrooms our interior design is country house traditional, in this space we adopted a more modern, light and airy contemporary style.

House Exterior

We deliberately left the fantastic exterior of the house untouched, save for repairs to the roof and windows and repainting. The contemporary side extension was added to replace the poor 1980s extension.
