Garden & Grounds

Once described by travel writer Alastair Sawday as Chester’s equivalent of the Royal Box, Edgar’s garden has fabulous views over the River Dee. It’s the perfect place for alfresco dining, lounging and river and people watching.

Things to do at Edgar House

Each of our homes is surrounded by great places to eat, explore and enjoy. Our Things to do guide offers information and local recommendations to help guests plan their stay and discover what the area has to offer, from pubs / restaurants and food suppliers to outdoor activities and attractions.

The Finer Details

Edgar’s super luxurious and quirky interiors offer a wonderful blend of tradition, bold contemporary design and modern comfort, and since we refurbished the property it has been featured in various magazines. Regrettably, we do not accept dogs.

The fabulous large open plan kitchen, dining and living space is perfect for entertaining. Relax in the cosy library / snug or play until your heart is content in the fun filled games room (air hockey, table football, darts and a juke box).

Enjoy a night at the movies in the wonderful cinema / TV room, which is equipped with Sky and internet connection for streaming your favourite films from your Netflix or Amazon account.

Edgar’s modern kitchen is gorgeous and very well equipped. However, if you don’t feel like cooking we will recommend some of Chester’s best restaurants or introduce you to one of several amazing private chefs who will cook up a treat for you at home at Edgar!

Seven luxurious ensuite bedrooms sleep up to 14 people. All 7 bedrooms have Super King size beds and 5 of those 7 are zip/link beds which means those 5 can be either Super King OR two singles. One of the bedrooms, King Edgar, has its own lounge with a small sofa double bed, taking the maximum house capacity to 16 if required.

In summer months dine outside on Edgar’s spectacular river view patio, once described by renowned travel writer Alistair Sawday as “Chester’s equivalent of the Royal Box”. There is plenty of outside seating to eat, drink, sit back and relax whilst listening to the river Dee flow over the tidal weir.

Chester’s world renowned zoo is a short drive away. Further afield, stunning Snowdonia, the Welsh mountains and coastline, the quaint market towns and villages of Cheshire, the Wirral Peninsula with its first class golf courses, Liverpool and Manchester are all within easy touring distance.

Edgar House is designed to be enjoyed by the whole family – we pride ourselves in being the perfect property for multi-generational familes celebrating big milestone birthdays and anniversaries.

Edgar House is a cherished family home. We offer stays to family groups and groups of friends only. We do not allow stag dos, weddings nor any type of commercial event, unless with our prior written consent..

Regrettably, we have a NO DOG policy, except for guide dogs.

All bookings are made subject to our terms and conditions.

The Ellis family care deeply about the places in which our homes are located and the communities around them.

Our properties are cherished family homes and they are managed thoughtfully and responsibly, with due regard to local amenity, residential character and relevant planning controls. We are keen that our homes are used in a way that is respectful of their settings and of the people who live nearby.

When we are not using our homes ourselves, we make them available for carefully managed holiday stays. Our aim in doing so is to ensure that the properties are not left empty but instead make a positive contribution to the local economy and community.

We encourage our guests to support local pubs, shops, cafés, restaurants, activity providers and services. To assist with this, we provide a “Things to do” / “Plan your stay” guide for each property, which simply offers information and recommendations about the local area. These recommendations are provided for guidance only and do not involve the provision, organisation or management of any services by us.

In addition, a proportion of the income generated from holiday stays is donated to local charitable and community organisations connected with the areas in which our homes are located.

We believe that, when managed responsibly, holiday homes can play a constructive role in sustaining local communities and we are committed to operating our homes in that spirit.

Guest Google Reviews

Don’t just take it from us! Edgar House has now received 150 five star Google reviews, and counting.

Families choose Edgar House because it offers the space and privacy of an exclusive-use holiday home together with many of the comforts, design details and service standards associated with a five-star luxury hotel.

Large family gatherings can be difficult to arrange in conventional hotels because guests are separated into different bedrooms and often have no comfortable private space in which the whole group can relax, dine and celebrate together. At Edgar House, one family or group has exclusive use of the entire property.

The house provides seven luxurious en-suite bedrooms, fabulous communal rooms, a contemporary kitchen, a cinema room, a games room, private outdoor space and seating from which guests can enjoy views over the River Dee. Up to 14 guests can sleep in the seven principal bedrooms, with accommodation for two additional children on the sofa bed in the King Edgar Suite. The maximum number of guests is therefore 16 people.

Its central Chester location is another important advantage. Guests can enjoy a luxury city-centre stay without having to drive whenever they want to visit a restaurant, explore the historic streets or walk beside the River Dee. Many of Chester’s principal attractions, shops, cafés and restaurants can be reached on foot.

Free private parking for at least eight cars is an especially unusual and valuable feature for a large holiday home in Chester city centre. Once everyone has arrived, guests may find that they leave their cars at the house for much of their stay.

Edgar House is particularly well suited to:

  • luxury family holidays;
  • multi-generational family gatherings;
  • family reunions;
  • milestone birthday celebrations;
  • wedding anniversaries;
  • retirement and graduation celebrations;
  • Christmas and New Year gatherings;
  • groups of friends seeking a special city break;
  • small luxury corporate gatherings; and
  • overseas families meeting relatives in the United Kingdom.

Above all, Edgar House has been created to give families the opportunity to spend meaningful time together in beautiful surroundings. Whether you are marking a 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th, 90th or even 100th birthday, celebrating a wedding anniversary or simply bringing several generations together, the house provides an elegant, luxurious and comfortable setting in which to make lasting family memories.

Chester is an excellent destination for a luxury family holiday because it combines history, architecture, shopping, dining, family attractions and riverside scenery within a compact and highly walkable city centre.

The city has almost 2,000 years of history. Visitors can explore its ancient City Walls, Roman amphitheatre, Roman Gardens, medieval streets, Chester Cathedral and the distinctive two-tier shopping galleries known as the Rows. Chester’s walls form the most complete city-wall circuit in Britain, while the Rows are a unique feature of the city’s historic centre. (Visit Chester & Cheshire)

Chester is sufficiently compact for different generations to enjoy the city at their own pace. Some members of a family may wish to explore the shops or visit the cathedral, while others may prefer a riverside walk, afternoon tea, a boat trip or an unhurried lunch.

For children and adults, Chester Zoo is one of the area’s best-known attractions and is approximately a 10-minute drive from central Chester, depending on traffic. Other possibilities include walking tours, river cruises, kayaking, Grosvenor Park, the Grosvenor Museum and seasonal events. (Visit Chester & Cheshire)

Chester is also well positioned for day trips into Cheshire, North Wales, the Wirral, Liverpool and the wider North West. This makes Edgar House a convenient base for families whose members have different interests but wish to stay together in one luxurious property.

Edgar House is distinguished by the combination of its exceptional position, substantial accommodation, individually designed interiors and exclusive-use format.

The house stands within Chester’s historic City Walls and enjoys elevated views over the River Dee. Guests can walk from the property to many of the city’s principal attractions, restaurants, cafés and shops.

Inside, the house offers seven luxurious en-suite bedrooms, impressive shared living and dining spaces, a contemporary kitchen, a cinema room and a games room. The property sleeps up to 16 guests and is rented as a whole house, giving one family or group complete privacy.

Edgar House was extensively refurbished and interior designed by us at Daisy Joy. It was created to offer a distinctive sense of occasion for guests seeking more than conventional self-catering accommodation.

Its location is one of its defining features. Edgar House offers the unusual combination of a central position within historic Chester, direct proximity to the City Walls, far-reaching River Dee views and free private parking.

The interior has been designed to feel bold, luxurious and memorable. The bedrooms are spacious, the bathrooms have been individually designed, the kitchen is contemporary and well suited to group stays and the communal rooms allow guests to relax and entertain together.

The house also offers the privacy and flexibility of an exclusive holiday home. Unlike a hotel, where a large family may be spread across separate bedrooms and public areas, Edgar House allows the whole group to stay, dine and celebrate together under one roof.

Yes. Edgar House is a luxury self-catering holiday home available for the exclusive use of one family or group. Guests have the freedom to organise their stay as they choose, prepare their own meals, arrange external catering or, subject to availability and prior agreement, engage a private chef. Edgar House does not operate as a staffed hotel and does not provide hotel services on site as standard. However, additional housekeeping or other services may sometimes be arranged in advance for an additional charge.

Many guests have commented that the quality of the interiors, bedrooms and bathrooms reminds them of staying in a five-star luxury hotel. However, Edgar House is an exclusive-use, self-catering holiday home rather than a hotel. There is no reception desk, restaurant, bar or permanent on-site hotel team. Instead, guests enjoy the privacy, space and flexibility of having an entire luxury house to themselves. Additional services, including mid-stay housekeeping, may be available by prior arrangement and for an additional charge

Booking a whole luxury house allows everyone to spend time together in a way that is rarely possible in a hotel. At Edgar House, guests can gather around the same dining table, relax together in the living areas, watch a film in the cinema room, enjoy the games room and celebrate privately without sharing their principal spaces with other hotel guests. At the same time, seven en-suite bedrooms give individuals and couples their own private accommodation. This balance of communal space and personal space is particularly valuable for multi-generational holidays and family celebrations.

The private parking, kitchen facilities and outdoor space also provide flexibility that may not be available when booking a collection of hotel bedrooms.

Yes. Edgar House is rented only as a whole-house booking. You will not share the property with another family or group. The reservation gives your party exclusive use of the house and its private guest areas for the duration of your stay, subject to the booking terms and house guidelines.

Yes. Independent reviews from previous guests are available online. You can read the latest Google reviews here.

Daisy Joy aims to provide a highly personal standard of service from the initial enquiry until departure. Before arrival, the team will liaise with the lead guest about practical arrangements, including bedroom configurations and any relevant requests.

Guests receive detailed arrival information and access to a Guest Guide containing information about the house. Support is available during the stay if a question or problem arises. Emergency contact details are included in the Guest Guide. Whether a reservation is made directly with Daisy Joy or through an approved specialist luxury booking agent, the aim is to provide the same high standard of care.

The maximum permitted occupancy is 16 guests. Edgar House has seven large en-suite bedrooms. These bedrooms provide luxurious accommodation for up to 14 people in conventional beds. The King Edgar Suite also includes a small private sitting room with a sofa bed that can be prepared for up to two children. This allows a maximum total occupancy of 16 guests. The occupancy limit includes adults and children and must not be exceeded without prior written agreement.

Edgar House has seven luxurious en-suite bedrooms. Each bedroom has its own individual design and character. Several bedrooms can be arranged with either a super-king bed or two single beds, subject to the available configuration and sufficient advance notice. Please discuss your preferred bedroom arrangements with the Daisy Joy team before arrival.

Some bedrooms can be configured with either a super-king bed or two single beds. The available arrangements depend on the individual bedroom. The lead guest will be invited to confirm the preferred bed configuration before the stay. Requests should be submitted by the stated deadline so that the housekeeping team can prepare the house correctly.
